Volunteers are needed to assist the hosting organizations plant a “rain garden” on the new Bayside Trail. It’s located behind the Planet Dog Company store at 211 Marginal Way here in Portland. The work day is Thursday, April 22nd at 9 am to 4 pm. Planet Dog Company and Portland Trails are co-hosting this work day.
This garden will showcase the important role that rain gardens can play in stormwater management. When rain and melting snow run off the roads and parking lots of downtown Portland, it flows into the storm drains and right into Casco Bay. The runoff carries with it oil, salt, fertilizer, pesticides, transportation chemicals, sediment and all sorts of other pollutants. Rain gardens can capture that runoff. The Planet Dog rain garden is the first of a series of rain gardens that will be planted all along the Bayside Trail this spring. (Ken Hahn, store manager for Planet Dog Co. stands in one of the future rain gardens behind the store.)
The Bayside Trail has been in the planning stages for about the last decade. It’s anticipated that the first mile will be completed later this spring. Proponents of the trail believe that this section of the trail system will revitalize the area and give it new life – as part of the overall Portland Trails system.
