Katie Made Bakery has been located at 147 Cumberland Avenue since 2000 and now co-owner Katie Capon is preparing to move her growing business to a larger store front at 181 Congress Street. The move is expected to happen in early 2013. Her commercial and retail bakery business has grown since her sister, Jennifer, became a partner in the business three years ago.
When Katie started-up her business in 2000, she was looking for a cheap rent and not for a sit down business – like a coffee shop. She was looking for a place to bake for her commercial customers; restaurants and coffee shops exclusively. But times have changed. “People found me,” she said grinning broadly. “People were looking for parking spots on Cumberland Avenue. They got curious about my business and it started growing. That’s why Jennifer came aboard in the summer of 2009. And it continues to grow.”
The two sisters get along well. And that’s good because the two share a compact space. Jennifer, an experienced caterer, takes care of the front of the house and Katie does the baking in the back of the house. Effficiency of movement is essential to this space-challenged venue. Formerly this spot was the original Silly’s which moved to a larger space on the nearby Washington Avenue; it was founded by two sisters – Deirdre and Stephanie Nice. They have since sold the business.
The 181 Congress Street location will permit the two to expand their retail menu to include more than they currently have soups and salads. (They already make delilcious sandwiches at the Cumberland Avenue location.) The new location will include display space for cakes, pies and other baked goods not currently possible because of space limitations. Seating for about nine will be available as well. The new location was most recently a tatoo parlor, an art gallery and before that a convenience store. Since there has never been a kitchen in 181 Congress Street, Katie said she is working closely with the city’s health inspector, D. Michelle Sturgeon, to ready it for the full-service bakery to come.
Meanwhile customers of Katie Made Bakery will be able to order from a menu of favorite pies for the Thanksgiving Holiday. They include apple, harvest, blueberry, mixed berry, pumpkin or pecan. (Please order by Monday, November 19th at 771.0994.) Open Tuesday – Saturday.
“We are excited to be in a more more visible location on Congress Street as well as to expand our business in the area,” said Katie, clearly pleased about the future of Katie Made Bakery.
