Danielle West-Chuta Selected as City’s Top Attorney; First Woman to Fill City Position

Danielle West-Chuta has been selected to be Portland’s next Corporation Counsel according to Mayor Michael Brennan in a press release issued today.  Her appointment will be considered by the City Council at its next meeting January 23, 2013.  West-Chuta will officially fill the position following the retirement of Gary Wood in September 2012.

Over the past four months, West-Chuta has been serving in the position as Acting Corporation Counsel.  In that capacity, she has provided legal advice to city staff, the Mayor and City Council as well as vaious city boards, committees and commissions for a variety of legal ilssues. West-Chuta joined the city’s legal team in 2008 as associate Corporation Counsel.  During her tenure she litigated and resolved complex municipal, land use, real estate, employment, licensing and environmental disputes.

“Her unflappable demeanor is often needed when dealing with complex and sometimes controversial legal issues.  She understands the city and the community and I am confident that the city’s legal team will benefit from her leadership,” said Mayor Brennan.  “I am delighted that she has accepted our offer.  I am very pleased that she represents the future of Portland – many younger professionals who are assuming key leadership positions in the city.”

“I’m excited about continuing my work for the city.  It’s an honor and I’m humbled by the committee’s selection,” West-Chuta said this afternoon in her office.

The Selection Committee included Mayor Michael Brennan, Councilors Jill Duson, John  Anton and David Marshall.
