Rachel Talbot Ross, President of the Maine NAACP, told a well – attended rally late this afternoon that it was not her intention to demonize George Zimmerman because he was acquitted of the killing of Trayvon Martin just over a week ago. Rather she said it was to act to get gun laws repealed – “Stand Your Ground” laws – wherever they exist. The rally this afternoon attracted a diverse crowd of about 200 people to Monument Square at 5 pm today.
Mayor Michael Brennan said: “I wish I didn’t have to be here for this rally. I’m not here to retry the case, but to put on trial the laws that caused Trayvon Martin’s death. We can’t build community if we all ‘Stand our Ground.’ I want a city and state where a 17 year old can walk to the store and back home and not be profiled or shot.”
Chief Michael Sauschuck said: “we are all anti-violence as a community. We want background checks.”
Larry Gilbert a member of Mayor’s Against Gun Violence asked: “How long will it take for our elected officials to listen to us. Bug your elected officials. Don’t be passive. Or remember it in November at the polls.
